Confidence in Directional Drilling for Complex Rail Projects

Reliable information about the subsurface is essential for rail projects, especially when planning, safety, and design choices depend heavily on what lies below ground level. In December 2025, Movares engaged us to determine the presence and location of directional boreholes at the Eindhoven rail yard.

The challenge:

Uncertainty Amid a Tight Schedule

According to the available KLIC information, there were supposed to be three directional boreholes at the project site. In practice, however, doubts arose regarding the actual number, the location, and the method used. At the same time, ProRail had a tight schedule, and the site was difficult to access.

It had already been noted during the bidding phase that realigning the boreholes might be necessary due to their theoretical location. At first, gyroscopic surveying did not seem feasible, which made the challenge even greater.

The process:

From verification to full insight

We began with a thorough preliminary investigation to determine the number of boreholes present. By combining a desk study with field data, we determined that there were actually two directional boreholes instead of three.

The following are the drill holes:

This phased approach made it possible to gradually eliminate uncertainty and build a reliable dataset.

The solution:

reliable data as the basis for design

Ultimately, two directional boreholes were fully mapped, to a depth of 14 meters and over a total length of 188 meters. The result is a complete and reliable profile of the subsurface conditions.

This information formed the basis for the final design of a Rail Deployment Site (RIP). Thanks to the insights gained, the design process was completed without delays or additional risks.

CLIENT
“You were a tremendous help to us on a project that wasn’t going very well, by always being available, acting quickly, and being incredibly flexible. Despite the intense pressure from the client, you delivered high-quality work. Without your dedication, we would have been in much deeper trouble. Thank you for that.”
