Pilot Project: Mapping Utrecht’s Basement Cellars Using 3D Ground-Penetrating Radar

Utrecht’s city center has a complex subsurface where historic structures and modern infrastructure intersect. Construction cellars are often located in unknown or inaccurately mapped areas, close to heating pipes and other utility lines. Accurate knowledge of the subsurface is essential for repair work on these shipyard cellars and for replacing the heating network. Therefore, a pilot project was conducted to detect these structures non-destructively and map them in 3D.

The challenge:

a unique underground puzzle

The project had several objectives. Not only did it require the creation of 3D maps of heating pipes and other existing cables and pipes, but also of the tops of historic wharf cellars—all without digging.

What made this pilot project particularly complex? Multiple overlapping layers of historic buildings and modern infrastructure, all situated close together in a compact underground space. A situation that requires an extremely precise approach without disturbing the subsoil.

The project produced a detailed 3D model showing construction site basements, heating pipes, and other cables and pipes. All underground structures are presented in a single, cohesive view.

This model supports planning, design, and implementation, and prevents excavation damage, delays, and failure costs.
