Efficient Cable and Pipeline Survey at the Gouda Railroad Yard
In March 2016, TerraCarta was commissioned by the consulting and engineering firm Sweco to conduct a large-scale cable and pipeline survey at the Gouda rail yard. This project was part of planned major work on the tracks and cable infrastructure. To locate underground cables and pipelines, approximately 350 test trenches were initially planned—a process that normally requires intensive physical labor and can disrupt train service.
Innovative approach:
safer and more efficient
Given the risks and the impact of manual excavation work in an operational railway area, TerraCarta, in collaboration with Sweco, proposed an innovative solution. Instead of manual excavation, an approach was developed that focused on the use of ground-penetrating radar and radio detection.
These methods made it possible to map cables and pipelines without large-scale physical interventions. The result? The number of test trenches required was drastically reduced, leading to faster, more efficient, and safer project execution. Furthermore, the work was completed within the allotted time, with minimal disruption to train service.
Results and
collaboration
Thanks to the collaboration with Sweco’s project team and the use of our advanced detection techniques, the investigation was successfully completed. This enabled Sweco and the parties involved to carry out the planned work on the rail yard with confidence and an up-to-date understanding of the underground infrastructure.
